At Core Plus Pelvic Therapy, we treat all genders and adults (ages 18+).
What should I bring to my first visit?
We recommend wearing comfortable clothing, as your therapist may have you perform some light stretches and exercises. For your first appointment, please arrive 15 minutes early to allow time to complete paperwork. You will need:
ID
Insurance card
A list of your current medications
Payment method (we accept credit cards, cash, or check)
WHat should I expect during my appointment?
Your appointments are entirely guided by you! All sessions are one-on-one with your therapist in a private treatment room. Sessions may look a little different depending on your diagnosis. Together, you and your therapist will determine what is best for you.
During your first session, we will review your medical history, discuss your complaints, symptoms, and goals. With your permission, your therapist will complete a physical exam. The examination and treatment will depend on your symptoms and comfort level. This may include an internal and external vaginal or rectal exam. Our pelvic health therapists are trained to perform internal exams, which allow us to assess muscle strength, function, and pain. You do not have to have an internal exam to receive pelvic floor therapy. An internal exam is not required, or always necessary, to receive pelvic floor therapy. Your therapist will work with your comfort level.
In addition to physical exams, we often use Biofeedback to help you reach your goals. Biofeedback allows your therapist to gain a deeper understanding of your pelvic floor. We attach sensors around your anus that can detect the activity of your pelvic floor muscles. You receive visual and auditory cues that allow us to see your pelvic floor at work. Then, we can use this data to compare progress between sessions.
After your therapist has gathered all the information they need, we will discuss a treatment plan, goals, frequency, and estimated time frame. During future appointments, we may use manual therapy techniques, exercise with the enhancement of Biofeedback, and other traditional physical/occupational therapy modalities to normalize muscle function.
All appointments take approximately 55 minutes.
How Long are the appointments?
All appointments are approximately 55 minutes with one-on-one care from your therapist. Sessions are held in a private treatment room.
How long Will i need pelvic floor therapy? When will I see results?
The easy answer is, everybody is different! Your length of therapy will depend on your diagnosis, your body, and how consistently you complete the exercises prescribed by your therapist. Typically, the more compliant you are with your home program, the faster you will see results and start meeting your goals. Your therapist will have a better understanding of your personalized needs after the first appointment. Then, they can give you a better estimate of your plan of care.
Will I have to do a lot of exercises at home?
We understand that our patients lead busy lives, so we try to minimize “home exercises” by giving you a limited number of activities or other "homework" that should align with your daily schedule. Home programs will always be designed for your specific needs.
Is pelvic floor therapy just for women?
No! People of all genders are able to receive pelvic floor therapy. If you are still wondering if you would be a good match for pelvic floor therapy, check out our "What We Do" page or contact us.
